Hi

my 15 year old son stole the keys to my car to take his girlfriend out on a date. He was stopped by a policeman for not wearing the seatbelt. Can the policeman charge him with a ticket even though my boy is a minor?

Hi Jess
The police should have more to say than to just hand your son a ticket. He is breaking the law by driving under age and without insurance etc. He could get into a lot of trouble and i can only assume that the officer never realized that you son was so young. Legally Any individual, business or young person under the age of 18, but over the age of 11 may be charged with a Provincial Offence. If a young person is charged with a Provincial Offence, their identity cannot be revealed and the Provincial Offence Notice must be served on the child’s parents. There is also no option for the payment of a fine if a child is charged with a Provincial Offence and therefore the youth is issued with a court summons.
