I live in Toronto and I am due a rent increase in April. My landlord has already given me a letter saying that it will be 3.5% more than last year - I find this extautionate, can he really do this? I don't want to move out of my property so is there anyway I can fight this increase?

The permitted increase for Toronto in 2010 is 2.1%. This is laid down by the Ontario  Landlord and Tenant Board, this means that landlords can only charge up to this amount for rent increases this year. As ever there are exceptions and if your landlord has had an expcetional increase in costs he can apply to the Landlord and Tenant Board to charge a higher rent. If this is what he has done he must show you their letter orf approval. You can read more on this topic at http://legalcanadacommunity.co…..0Agreement
