Hello fellows,
I wonder if this is legal – my landlord just called me today to tell me that he is increasing my rent by 8%. I told him it is too much and he said I could always leave my apartment. What shall I do now – I want to keep my place and he will absolutely not give in on the raise. Help?
thanks, Dom

Dear Dominic,
The rent increase for Ontario for the year 2010 is 2.1%. You do not mention the province you live in, but probably it is something arounfd this figure. 8% is too much and is probably illegal. You need to contact the Residential Tenacy Board in your province to find out the exact number. Look up for information here:

This is exactly what happened to me! My landlord increased my rent this year by 10% this year and I have two children, I have nowhere to go. Have you contacted this Board and what did they say?
thanks

Delphine, I urge you to go to your landlord and tenant board. They can at least check whether your landlord registered for an above guideline increase and if he did explain what it was for and what you can do about it. If he hasn't then they can help address the problem with him on your behalf. Find your landlord and tenant board here http://legalcanadacommunity.co…..0Locations
