Hi, My name is susan and I rent a flat in Ontario. Last week my landlord told me he wants to increase the rent by 5% in 2010. Is this legal?

Hello Susan

The 2010 guideline for rent increases in Ontario is 2.1%. This means that your landlord can only increase your rent by a maximum of this amount unless he has prior permission from the Ontario Landlord and Tenant Board. You should ask to see documentation from the Landlord and Tenant Board, which allows him / her to charge above and beyond this level before agreeing to the increase.
