Should I sign a Non-Compete after I resigned

Andrew Wilson

I live in Alberta and I recently resigned from my job.  While finishing out my last two weeks I was presented with an employment contract and a very long Non-compete.  They just kept putting this stuff off and now they want to have me sign them.

I am concerned that it may affect my new employment and I can't see why I would sign it.  DO they have any legal ability to make me sign now that I am leaving?

Dear Andrew,

You can sign the contract. The Non-compete clause doesn't really prevent you from working in the industry, unless you go work for a company that makes the same product or competes for the same contract as your former business. That kind of contract won't stand up in court, but your ex-employers won't even bother going after you unless you are hurting their business directly.
